Old West Austin
Old West Austin is Austin’s historic district located west of downtown Austin and north of Lady Bird Lake. It is one of the oldest communities in Austin, having been established in 1853. Today, a population of over 4,217 are enamored by Old West Austin’s historic charm and call this neighborhood home.
A number of Old West Austin sites are declared historic landmarks in the city of Austin. These are Ethel Felder Webster House, Fisher-Gideon House (Pemberton Castle), Splitrock, Judge Robert Lynn Batts House, and Cruchon Home.
The Old West Austin residential area is easily distinguished by its small lots, narrow streets, and front porches. It is the picture of a close-knit community, featuring well-preserved mid-20th century homes with perfectly landscaped lawns. Residents are always out on a stroll or socializing with people next door.
Homes have canopies molded by shady oak, elm, and pecan trees. One of Austin’s oldest trees, a 600-year-old treaty oak, can be found in this neighborhood.
Walking, jogging, and biking in the neighborhood is safe. Improved sidewalks and ample street lighting make Old West Austin a walkable neighborhood. Public transportation is also easily accessible in the community.

In the 1980s, the Old West Austin Neighborhood Association pushed for the prohibition of multifamily construction. This resulted in a few condos and preserved bungalows and old, historic homes. Moreover, this movement was responsible for keeping real estate prices in check and preventing historic sites from being demolished for commercial use.
The community in Old West Austin is diverse. In the neighborhood elementary school, over 40 nationalities are represented. Graduate students of the University of Texas and their families also live in the neighborhood.

There are many local businesses in Old West Austin, with homegrown brands dominating the local market. You can find retail stores, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes that suit your taste in the area. Chain establishments are few, but the flagship store of Whole Foods is headquartered here in Old West Austin.
Old West Austin’s Park features a wading pool, picnic areas, and play area for children. Good news for pet lovers, Old West Austin’s West Austin Park has its own fully fenced off-leash areas for dogs. There are also parks with basketball and tennis courts, making the neighborhood suitable for year-round living.
Popular attractions include Deep Eddy Pool, Texas’ oldest swimming pool. It was constructed in 1916 and fed by spring water. Guests can go lap swimming, wade in the pool, or enjoy poolside movies during summer.
Another attraction is Camp Mabry, an 800-acre military center since 1892. Here, you will find the Texas Military Forces Museum. Meanwhile, the 23-acre Mayfield Park stands at 35th street. It is a nature preserve where wooded trails and a historic cottage are the main draw.
Just a stone’s throw away from Mayfield Park is the 1916 Mediterranean villa Laguna Gloria, where The Contemporary Austin is at. Due to its romantic architecture, Laguna Gloria often serves as a venue for wedding receptions and private parties.
Since Old West Austin is near the lake, boating and fishing are popular activities among homeowners. There’s also a 10-mile biking and hiking trail frequented by locals. Head to Zilker Park and Barton Creek Greenbelt, a favorite among those who love outdoor fun.
